Pierce Family Memories
by Angella Perry Graybeal
The Key to the
Numbering system: Each descendant listed
is first found under his/her parents name, on the far left side of the
page. A number is given if the person has children. Go forward
to the number found in bold type at the left to find the person with
their spouse and children.
1. HARDY
PIERCE The Cora Pierce family
bible has Hardy next to Arthurs name. It
could be his father as it appears or the person writing the entry could be
confused with all of the other Hardy
Pierces in this family tree. no
proof has been found so far. I also
found two other researchers that had Hardy as the parent.
Children of HARDY
PIERCE are:
2. i. ARTHUR PIERCE, b. Abt. 1774, Wake County, NC;
d. June 04, 1854, Overton, TN.
3. ii. JOHN PIERCE, b. Abt. 1772, NC; d. 1808, Carter
Co. Tn..
4. iii. HARDY PIERCE, b. Abt. 1770, Wake, NC; d.
February 11, 1851, Overton, TN.
Arthur, Hardy and John were
blacksmiths. Blacksmiths were critical
to the early communities. Not only did they shoe the horses and build the wagons
but they also made wagon wheel rims and made repairs. As commerce picked up and
more settlers arrived, there was an increasing demand for plows and rifles. The
Revolutionary War effort alone provided a great demand for blacksmiths and
gunsmiths. The loggers needed saws and axes as well as chains and hooks.
Homesteaders needed hardware and house wares, most of which the blacksmith
made. Blacksmiths made and repaired hinges, household goods, farm implements,
tools, and locks.
Life in
the mountains: Most everything was made
by hand: wool hats, shoes, tools and
bedding filled with cattails, oak leaves or corn shucks, unless one was lucky
enough to collect feathers to fill a tick.
They made their own candles but often were forced to use saucers filled with
tallow and a cloth wick, which were called sluts. They often had to use molasses instead of
sugar as sweetening. Usually once a year
people would organize horse or ox teams and head for South Carolina or Georgia
for staples such as salt and sugar.
Each community had a mill to grind corn
into meal. It was a custom that for every turn of ground corn, the miller got a
small measure, called a toddick. It was
a rule that every man work one day a month on the roads. Most of the furniture was handmade and held
together with wood dowels.
Women had to work very
hard. Besides cooking and cleaning, they
joined together in making quilts and coverlets, helped to plant, hoe and gather
crops; they even plowed and split rails,
if needed. They made cider and molasses
and made all the clothing on spinning wheels and looms.
For relaxation and social activity, the
communities got together for corn shuckings and molasses pulls. This was designed to promote courtships.
Music was played on banjos or an adaptation of the German zither called a
dulcimer, a oblong string instrument created in the Appalachian Mountains.
In the 1790's, it was still dangerous
in East Tennessee. The settlers had suffered greatly at the
hands of the Indians during the Revolutionary War. Even after the war, the Indians continued to attack and raid
the white settlers. There are many
records of attacks upon settlers and
cabin-homes throughout all the territory of Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky
during the 1790's

HISTORY: The Pierces
now living in Pickett Co Tenn are all descendants of Arthur and Hardy Pierce
who were supposedly brothers. Arthur
& Hardy were born in North Carolina during the 1770's. They came to East Tenn in the early 1800's
and were in Overton Co., Tenn, (now Pickett Co., Tenn) in the Oak Hill
Community by 1830. Arthur & Hardy Pierce were both members of the Wolf
River United Baptist Church. Arthur was
dismissed from the church. It appears
Arthur may have moved back to East Tenn and then returned to Overton Co., Tenn
where he was living in 1850 with the family - listed above . According to
Caryle Amonett, the early Pierces were blacksmiths, and their shop was
located on the present John L. Johnson farm in the Oak Hill Community of
Pickett Co Tenn. Arthur died in 1854.
History of Families in Pickett Co
Tenn.
In 1819, The Sewells, The Tompkins, The
Cargills, The Staleys, The Parsons, The Pierces and others who had come from
WILKES CO North Carolina and settled along the Wolf River, formed the nucleus
for the membership of Wolf River Baptist Church. Arthur Pierce donated the original site for
the church. Later a "reform
movement" led by "Raccoon John" Smith, Alexander Campbell,
Jonathan Young and the Sewell brothers, left the congregation in August of 1842
and started another church later to be known as the Christian Church.

source for Jane's birth
date is Church of Latterday Saints family files. There is the possibility that Elizabeth ,
Rebecca or Jane are Hardy's children.
Researchers are disagreeing and I have seen no proof.
No proof that Mary
Fitzgerald was wife of Arthur. Our
family bible did not list Griffin Pierce's mother. The name has come from other researchers. I did find a NC will record online for John
Fitzgerald who died 1751 and mentioned
his daughter Mary Fitzgerald Pierce and husband Arthur. These dates make it impossible to be this
Arthur Pierce. Robert Nave, Historian
suspects that a Griffin was the first wife.
"According to Wolf River Baptist Church
records. Nancy died 1824." Nancy Thomkins Pierce & Arthur were early
members of Wolf River Church.

Joseph Cable is the son of Casper Cable and
Elizabeth Baker. Casper was born 1755.
He lived with his family in
Hanover, Germany and was nineteen years old when he came to America with the
company of Hessian soldiers who were paid by the British to fight against the
Colonists. He was captured by George
Washington at Trenton, New Jersey on Dec 26, 1776. He volunteered out of prison and fought with
the colonists until the end of the war.
For his service Casper was given a grant of land by the American
Government for hundreds of acres of land in what is now Johnson County. He
owned many slaves who cleared the land and carried on considerable
farming. Later Casper had a large apple
orchard. The apples were used in making
brandy. It has been told while
Casper lived in Hanover, Germany, his father had arranged a marriage for him
with a girl who was many years older, and who was scarred from smallpox. Financially it was a great match for Casper;
however he was opposed to the match. As
the wedding date drew near, he became desperate and ran away to join the German
Army. He was then sent to the province
of Hesse Cassel. He was one of 22,000
troops hired by England to fight the Colonists.
Casper
was a friend of Julius Ceasar Dugger. Casper was a prosperous man and
had great pride in his family. When Adam
Mast came over the mountains from Valle Crucis to pay court to Casper's
daughter, Ellizabeth, and the wedding date was announced, Casper saddled his
horse and swung on his saddlebags and traveled many miles by bridle-path
through the wilderness to Jonesboro to buy Elizabeth's wedding trousseau. It took three days to make the trip. Casper's children: Joseph, Peter b. 1792, Benjamin b. 1789,
Conrad, John, Casper Jr, Sarah, Daniel,Samuel, Elizabeth
