Pierce Family Memories

The Key to the Numbering system:  Each descendant listed is first found under his/her parents name, on the far left side of the page.  A number is given  if the person has children.  Go forward  to the number found in bold type at the left to find the person with their spouse and children.

1.  HARDY PIERCE         The Cora Pierce family bible has Hardy next to Arthurs name.  It could be his father as it appears or the person writing the entry could be confused with all of the other Hardy  Pierces in this family tree.  no proof has been found so far.  I also found two other researchers that had Hardy as the parent.

Children of HARDY PIERCE are:

2.                   i. ARTHUR PIERCE, b. Abt. 1774, Wake County, NC; d. June 04, 1854, Overton, TN.

3.                  ii. JOHN PIERCE, b. Abt. 1772, NC; d. 1808, Carter Co. Tn..

4.                 iii. HARDY PIERCE, b. Abt. 1770, Wake, NC; d. February 11, 1851, Overton, TN.

Arthur, Hardy and John were blacksmiths.  Blacksmiths were critical to the early communities. Not only did they shoe the horses and build the wagons but they also made wagon wheel rims and made repairs. As commerce picked up and more settlers arrived, there was an increasing demand for plows and rifles. The Revolutionary War effort alone provided a great demand for blacksmiths and gunsmiths. The loggers needed saws and axes as well as chains and hooks. Homesteaders needed hardware and house wares, most of which the blacksmith made. Blacksmiths made and repaired hinges, household goods, farm implements, tools, and locks.

Life in the mountains:  Most everything was made by hand:  wool hats, shoes, tools and bedding filled with cattails, oak leaves or corn shucks, unless one was lucky enough to collect feathers to fill a tick.  They made their own candles but often were forced to use saucers filled with tallow and a cloth wick, which were called sluts.  They often had to use molasses instead of sugar as sweetening.  Usually once a year people would organize horse or ox teams and head for South Carolina or Georgia for staples such as salt and sugar.

Each community had a mill to grind corn into meal. It was a custom that for every turn of ground corn, the miller got a small measure, called a toddick.  It was a rule that every man work one day a month on the roads.  Most of the furniture was handmade and held together with wood dowels.

Women had to work very hard.  Besides cooking and cleaning, they joined together in making quilts and coverlets, helped to plant, hoe and gather crops;  they even plowed and split rails, if needed.  They made cider and molasses and made all the clothing on spinning wheels and looms.

For relaxation and social activity, the communities got together for corn shuckings and molasses pulls.  This was designed to promote courtships. Music was played on banjos or an adaptation of the German zither called a dulcimer, a oblong string instrument created in the Appalachian Mountains.

In the 1790's, it was still dangerous in  East Tennessee.  The settlers had suffered greatly at the hands of the Indians during the Revolutionary War.  Even after the  war, the Indians continued to attack and raid the white settlers.  There are many records of attacks  upon settlers and cabin-homes throughout all the territory of Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky during the 1790's

HISTORY: The Pierces now living in Pickett Co Tenn are all descendants of Arthur and Hardy Pierce who were supposedly brothers.  Arthur & Hardy were born in North Carolina during the 1770's.  They came to East Tenn in the early 1800's and were in Overton Co., Tenn, (now Pickett Co., Tenn) in the Oak Hill Community by 1830. Arthur & Hardy Pierce were both members of the Wolf River United Baptist Church.  Arthur was dismissed from the church.  It appears Arthur may have moved back to East Tenn and then returned to Overton Co., Tenn where he was living in 1850 with the family - listed above . According to Caryle Amonett, the early Pierces were blacksmiths, and their shop was located on the present John L. Johnson farm in the Oak Hill Community of Pickett Co Tenn. Arthur died in 1854.   History  of Families in Pickett Co Tenn.

In 1819, The Sewells, The Tompkins, The Cargills, The Staleys, The Parsons, The Pierces and others who had come from WILKES CO North Carolina and settled along the Wolf River, formed the nucleus for the membership of Wolf River Baptist Church.  Arthur Pierce donated the original site for the church.  Later a "reform movement" led by "Raccoon John" Smith, Alexander Campbell, Jonathan Young and the Sewell brothers, left the congregation in August of 1842 and started another church later to be known as the Christian Church.

RELIGION: On May 5, 1821, Arthur and Nancy Pierce were 2 of the 28 Charter members of the Wolf River Baptist Church, in Overton Co. TN.

Arthur divorced his first wife to marry a younger woman.  His 2nd wife died.

His 3rd wife was excluded from Wolf River United Baptist Church "for swearing on a Bible, making mischief between Viney Cole and husband, and being unreasonable in the correction of Mary Ann's stepchildren.  p 29 June Rayfield Welch

Arthur and  3rd wife, Mary Marbrey divorced.

___________

source for Jane's birth date is Church of Latterday Saints family files.  There is the possibility that Elizabeth , Rebecca or Jane are Hardy's children.  Researchers are disagreeing and I have seen no proof.

No proof that Mary Fitzgerald was wife of Arthur.   Our family bible did not list Griffin Pierce's mother.  The name has come from other researchers.  I did find a NC will record online for John Fitzgerald who  died 1751 and mentioned his daughter Mary Fitzgerald Pierce and husband Arthur.  These dates make it impossible to be this Arthur Pierce.  Robert Nave, Historian suspects that a Griffin was the first wife.

"According to Wolf River Baptist Church records. Nancy died 1824." Nancy Thomkins Pierce & Arthur were early members of  Wolf River Church.

Joseph Cable is the son of Casper Cable and Elizabeth Baker.  Casper was  born 1755.  He  lived with his family in Hanover, Germany and was nineteen years old when he came to America with the company of Hessian soldiers who were paid by the British to fight against the Colonists.  He was captured by George Washington at Trenton, New Jersey on Dec 26, 1776.  He volunteered out of prison and fought with the colonists until the end of the war.  For his service Casper was given a grant of land by the American Government for hundreds of acres of land in what is now Johnson County. He owned many slaves who cleared the land and carried on considerable farming.  Later Casper had a large apple orchard.  The apples were used in making brandy.      It has been told while Casper lived in Hanover, Germany, his father had arranged a marriage for him with a girl who was many years older, and who was scarred from smallpox.  Financially it was a great match for Casper; however he was opposed to the match.  As the wedding date drew near, he became desperate and ran away to join the German Army.  He was then sent to the province of Hesse Cassel.  He was one of 22,000 troops hired by England to fight the Colonists.

Casper  was a friend of Julius Ceasar Dugger. Casper was a prosperous man and had great pride in his family.  When Adam Mast came over the mountains from Valle Crucis to pay court to Casper's daughter, Ellizabeth, and the wedding date was announced, Casper saddled his horse and swung on his saddlebags and traveled many miles by bridle-path through the wilderness to Jonesboro to buy Elizabeth's wedding trousseau.  It took three days to make the trip.     Casper's children:  Joseph, Peter b. 1792, Benjamin b. 1789, Conrad, John, Casper Jr, Sarah, Daniel,Samuel, Elizabeth

History of Tennessee Valley Baptist church:  The TN Valley Baptist Church ranks as one of the oldest houses of worship in Vermillion County, Indiana.  The church still stands on the land that was once settled by a native of the state of TN.  Mr Thomas Dugger, who did not believe in slavery.

Before the Civil War began Mr. Thomas Dugger travelled north on horseback to Indiana to look at the Free State and traded his farm and home located in Tennessee for this land where this church stands.  In 1860, Mr Dugger left his family to return to Vermillion County to visit the Indiana land he had purchased.  He liked what he saw and promptly named his new land and the surrounding land, Tennessee Valley.

The Civil War intervened and his family was unable to join him until 1864.  When the war ended, Thomas went back to Tennessee and to bring his family, friends and some relatives,  who were against slavery, to his land in Indiana.

"the Old Records" stated "They had occasion leave the State of Tennessee, it not  being very healthy there during and after the war."

By 1870, other friends and relatives of the Dugger family had came to live in the Tennessee Valley, Indiana.  All of those people were Baptists and they brought their membership cards to the Heidle Baptist Church in Vermillion County.

Elder William McMasters of Montzuma was the pastor of that church and he received permission to preach one sermon per month in the Staats School where the Dugger group maintained a mission house.  Pastor William McMasters held a revival meeting that resulted in the addition of 3 new members to the Dugger Group.

In September, 1872, the Tennessee Valley Baptist Church was organized in the Staats School.  The first members were:  Thomas Dugger and wife, James B. Lewis and wife, Henry J. Howard and wife,  Rose J. Pierce Underwood, James A. G. Dugger and Wife, John J Dugger and Benjamin Dugger and wife

By 1885 the membership increased from 12 to 100 members.

On December 12, 1875 the church organized a Sunday school class.  James B. Lewis was the first superintendent and held that office until his death 25 years later.

Phoebe Jane Crowe was a charter member of Doe Valley Methodist Church

Tombstone says Pheby Jayne Pierce.  Burial: Robinson Cemetery, Doe Valley

Isaac Crow's brother John C. Crow married Levicy Carriger daughter of  Christian Carringer b. 1779 and Levicy Ward b. 1789  Christian and Levicy Ward Carriger had fourteen children, all of whom were born in Carter County.  In 1842 Christian and Levicy and some of the younger children left Carter County and settled in Independence, Missouri.  They moved to Missouri for a while and then set out to California, but Christian died en route. Christian Carriger was buried in the Rocky Mountains.  Levicy Ward Carriger and family continued on to California .

Christian was  Colonel in the War of 1812,  He built the first brick house in Carter County.  He served 2 terms in TN General Assembly.   (Christian's father is  Godfrey Carriger born 1731..see Allen Carriger and Margaret Pierce number 42 for Godfrey's story)

Phoebe's grandfather, Robert Campbell Crow born 1783  served in the War of 1812.  He settled on the Lincoln Plantation, Carter, TN. His wife was Phoebe Williams.  Thirteen children and one step-son listed on unprobated Will found in the office of the County Clerk's Office Carter, TN dated 1867.

Robert Campbell Crow's father also named Robert Crow ( Phoebe's Great grandfather) was born abt 1750.  Robert (b. 1750) enlisted December 1777 for 3 years in the Revolutionary War. He served as private in Capt. Joseph Crockett's Company, 7th VA regiment.  With that company, he marched from Fincastle County, VA (Wythe) to Valley Forge, PA.  Then he went to Monmouth Courthouse, NJ  on June 28, 1788.  He fought in the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse.  His next move was to White Plains, NY.  In July 1779, he was given early discharge from the army for apprehending 3 deserters.     By 1804, he was living in Carter County, TN. Robert applied for a war pension on Oct, 1819.  In 1822, Robert stated his wife, age 67, was nearly blind and that he was old and very infirmed and indigent and incapable of supporting himself by his own labor.  In 1823, he received pension of $8.00 per month.  Robert  and wife Nancy  lived in Washington, VA on the south side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River.  In 1797, they are found in Carter, TN until 1811 when they moved to Roane , TN where they both died.  On the 1772 Fincastle tax records found in Botetourt, VA, Robert, who just turned age 21, is declared by his father, Robert Crow, to be his son.

(Robert Crow's ancestry has been traced to John Crow, Esquire, Adventurer, of Waterford, Ireland, who booked passage for 100 persons from London, England to Virginia in the early 1600s.  "Descendants From First Families of Virginia and Maryland," by Maude Crowe, Copyright - 1978.)

Pheobe's mother was Elizabeth Hart.  Elizabeth was the daughter of  Leonard Hart born 1758 in Germany and his  wife Mary Emmert Poland.

Leonard Hart (Phoebe's grandfather)  and two of his brothers went to North Carolina and fought in the Revolution with the NC Patriots.

Leonard went to Sullivan County, TN and settled on land near Beaver Creek and the Holston River.

Leonard was one of the over-mountain men from Sullivan County who gathered at Sycamore Shoals on the Watauga River and left on September 25, 1780 for the march to King's Mountain, South Carolina.  There British  forces were  killed or captured on October 7, 1780.  Although Leonard was in the ranks, he did not engage in the shooting warfare because he and several others, came down with smallpox on the way to the battle. Within the sound of battle, these men with smallpox were left to guard the horses of those who did the fighting.

In 1792, Leonard bought 400 acres in Sullivan County.  Ten children were born in Sullivan County before his first wife Sally Goodman died.

In 1807, He sold most of his Sullivan county land.  He left his son, John, there to farm the remaining 50 acres and moved to Carter County.

Leonard  paid Joseph Sevier $1,500.00 for 200 acres near Sycamore Shoals.

He married 2nd ( married about 1808) Mary Emmert widow of John Poland.  They had 4 children.

In 1812, Leonard was deeded 139 acres in Sullivan County, founded on TN land grant # 2318, issued on February 1, 1796.  Two months after he registered this grant, he sold the land.  Part went to his son John and part to John Smith of Sullivan County.

In 1823, He married Phoebe Profitt,  no children were born of this marriage.

In 1823, during a spell of sickness, Leonard made a legal agreement with his son, William, who was to inherit all of his father's land and property in exchange for caring for Phoebe Profitt Hart and William's younger brothers and sisters and making payment to the older children.  However,  William died in 1825.

In 1847, Leonard gave 1 acre of land  in Turkeytown to the Baptist meeting house.

When Leonard died in 1852, the remainder of his land was divided between his sons Solomon and Abraham.

Tombstone at Sinking Creek Cemetery reads:  HART, Leonard 1758-1852, "An overmountain man and Revolutionary War  Veteran of the Kings Mountain Battle is buried in these grounds".

James B. Pierce's pension record contains a deposition dated December 29. 1886 from Sarah Jane Dugger Pierce. states:

My name is Sarah Jane Pierce. I am 49 year old, I am widow of William C. Pierce and I live near Duggers Ferry, TN.  I am  cousin of Henry C. Pierce, Our fathers were half-brothers. I know Frankie Pierce, wife of Henry C. Pierce.  I am not connected with her except through her husband.  I have known Frankie Pierce and her family all my life.  At the time the war broke out, I lived within 2 miles of said Henry Pierce with the Watauga River between us.   And ever since 1860, I have lived within 3 miles and part of the time within 1/4 of a mile of her.  From 1860 until Sarah Ann  moved away to Indiana.  I lived within 1/4 of a mile of Mrs Sarah Ann Pierce who is also my cousin.  I know James B. Pierce son of Frankie Pierce who was said to have died in service while a member of Co A 13 Tenn Cav. James worked for my husband a month in Spring of the year in which he enlisted in the Fall.  He did farm work for my husband and for his labor we gave his mother some bacon and bread-stuff while he was still working.   what was not paid for of his labor was settled for by my husband with the mother of said James B. after said son enlisted.  The son told us when he left our employ to finish paying him by giving what we owed him to his mother Frankie Pierce.  The contribution so made was necessary to the support of Frankie Pierce because she was poor and did not have much.

Henry C. Pierce, husband of Frankie Pierce could not support his family because the Rebels would not let him stay at home to work "a man could not work and scout in the woods".  If  Henry ever had complained of having rheumatism before the war or ever walked lame or used a cane, I did not know it.  Henry has been complaining of rheumatism in his knees ever since he came out of the army, whenever  I have seen him and I saw him within a week after his return home from the war.  Sometimes he complains of hurting all over.  I first saw him lame the next winter after he came home.  I saw him one winter with his leg all drawed up and he had to walk on his cane.  That was after the war and while he was teaching school or had just finished a term.  Except the lameness and the drawed- up leg, I have never seen any evidence of his having rheumatism.  Mrs. Pierce has worked out ever since I have known her and this family have always been poor and dependant on their own labor for their living.      Sarah J Pierce

David Jesse Morely, Civil War Pension file contains :  Deposition A  Case of minor of David J. Morley, On this 29 day of October 1913 at Fish Spring, county of Carter, appeared Sarah J. Pierce, who says:  I am 77 years old:  am the widow of William Pierce.  My address is Butler, TN # 3 route.  I knew David J. Morley all his life and I knew Sarah Clawson whom he married nearly all her life.  Neither had a former marriage.  I am sure of this.  I was present when their child Iris was born and she was born Sept. 2 1881.  I know that because my grandson Crumley was born Sept. 2, 1880 and Iris was a year younger to a day.  I was also present when their youngest child Roy was born but I cannot give the date to save my life,  but I recollect he was a right small little boy, about 4 years old as near as I can come to it, when his mother died.  I don't recollect the date of her death but it was in July.  It was then or near then just before she took down sick and Roy wanted to go with her to hunt a cow.  He must have been at least 4 years old.  Oh yes, he was over 3 years old.  He was wearing onesies when his mother died but boys wore onesies back them days til they were 4 or 5 years old.  I am very distantly related to claimants aunts.   I recollect the two children were born between Iris and Roy, One was a boy born in March 1886 for I have a granddaughter who was born the same night, March 22.  Her boy died after a few months.  Now Roy came next.  I recollect it was he came a little over 2 years later.

There are 3 stories about the death of John Archer.

- One story is that John Archer said to have died 1861 in Motley County, TX.

- Second, his granddaughter, Eva White,  told a story that in 1863 a stranger came to the house and called John out.  He left with the man and was not heard from again.

- Third.  He was killed in a hunting accident.  He went hunting with Joseph M. Elliott who leaned a rifle against a fence, and climbed over.  The gun fell and discharged, killing John Archer.  This story is likely because Serena Archer became a ward of Joseph Elliott's relatives.  Serena married Peter Bolinger Elliott, son of Joseph.
