Ask HN: What are the best books with problem sets that test your understanding?

Mon, 04/14/2025 - 2:07am

What books with end-of-chapter problems have you found most valuable for truly mastering a subject? I'm open to recommendations in any field – computer science, math, physics, economics, etc.

Some of my best learning experiences have come from textbooks that forced me to apply concepts - attack problems directly and refer to the prose on need basis to fill the gaps.

My favourites are - 1. Problems in General Physics by I. E. Irodov 2. Concepts of Physics by H.C Verma Part I & II 3. How to Solve It by George Pólya

Tell HN: Sites are bluffing with their cookie pop-ups

Mon, 04/14/2025 - 2:04am

For the longest time I always hit "Accept all", because if I'm going to look at stuff like wikileaks etc. I use incognito mode, and I obviously wanted to use the site requesting permission, so I didn't want it to break. Just for fun I've started to always click "Reject all" or "Necessary only" or whatever the non-"Accept all" option is, and...not a single site has functioned worse in any way.

This may be old news to many, but I found it mildly amusing.

Show HN: I made an open-source tool to visualise and debug MQTT data

Mon, 04/14/2025 - 1:05am

I recently open-sourced a tool that I've been working on for about a year.

Existing GUI tools for MQTT were either old and unmaintained or frustrating to use.

I started it as a way to play with Go, Wails (a Go app-building framework) and Svelte as an alternative to Electron. I'm happy to answer any questions about my experiences with these.

If you're an MQTT user I'd appreciate feedback!
