Show HN: Lwlnow – Dictation-based practice for language learners

Hacker News - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 6:11am

Hey HN,

I’m excited to share lwlnow, a web app designed to help language learners improve their listening, vocabulary, and writing skills through dictation-based practice — a method that’s simple, immersive, and surprisingly powerful.

Why we built it Most language learning apps focus on passive exposure or gamified memorization. But real fluency comes from training your brain to understand native speech and respond with precision.

Dictation is one of the most underrated yet effective ways to build that skill: • Listen to a native sentence • Type exactly what you hear • Get instant feedback on spelling, grammar, and word recognition

It’s like shadowing — but active, and it works incredibly well for learners at every level.

Who is it for? • Learners who want to internalize grammar naturally • People struggling with listening comprehension • Students looking for daily active practice

We’re still early and improving fast — your feedback would mean a lot: • What do you like? • What would you add or change? • Which languages should we support next?

Thanks for checking it out — and good luck with your language journey!

Show HN: Digest – Create daily briefings from any source (HN, Reddit, X, RSS)

Hacker News - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 6:07am

Hey HN! I've built Digest to fix my own information overload. It provides custom daily briefings from the sources you care about.

Most of us check 10+ places a day — HN, reddit, X, RSS feeds, substack, youtube, newsletters, weather, calendar, etc.

Digest pulls content from all of them and compiles it into one clean email.

Choose your sources, set filters, and Digest does the rest. It’s for people who want less noise and want to stay informed without wasting too much time.

Some example use cases:

- A morning briefing that contains: weather for today, HN top posts, top posts from subreddits, and your meetings for the day

- An evening briefing to see top posts you missed for the day on HN, Reddit, as well as top news stories, and your meetings for tomorrow

- A daily overview of all the newsletters you've received, and you can easily read them in our newsletter reader.

- A daily briefing on specific topics, like AI, which pulls content from X, subreddits, RSS feeds, youtube and more.

I'd love feedback and ideas

Ask HN: How do you handle name discrimination?

Hacker News - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 5:58am

My name is difficult to pronounce and is Arabic in origin, I am western in all other ways. I get the feeling that people avoid saying it because they are afraid of mispronouncing it, or when they read it they make a judgement about me.

Have you ever used a different name on job applications, or cold emails to avoid any sort of discrimination and get your foot in the door?

Feels disingenuous, but also how can someone with a name that people make judgements on get past the fact that discrimination exists.
