Show HN: Continuous Page Speed & Stability Monitoring

Hacker News - Mon, 04/08/2024 - 7:43pm

Hi Everyone, I've been working on FastMonitor.io solo for about a year now. FastMonitor monitors how fast your site is, and alerts you if it gets slower.

Wanted to show it to you guys and get some feedback.

Back Story: I built the basic tool kit for my previous startup - we were doing SEO and had very slow page speed across a wide variety of pages, so I ran lighthouse on an instance every day and put the results in the database and on a chart. This allowed us to chart our progress and celebrate when our pages got faster, or roll back / find the problem when things got slower.

Feedback: Would really love everyone's feedback!

Unfortunately you have to sign up to try it, but it's a free and painless signup, and the free forever plan includes monitoring for 5 URLS.

Major features: 1. Chart your page speed insights Performance Score by checking every 12-24 hours 2. Check your server response time and chart that too by checking every 5-60 minutes 3. Alert's you if there's an error (404, 500, etc, get an email) 4. Invite your team so it can be collaborative 5. For enterprise clients, do it from Lighthouse on an instance near their datacenter - piloting with first enterprise client.

Roadmap: 0. In progress - crawl sitemaps for easy onboarding. Surface all the pages and select the most important ones to monitor.

2. Slow Performance alerts - if a page goes below a certain performance threshold, alert you

3. Shared notes - write a note on a page's chart, to remember when something happened/change/jot down analysis/hypotheses.

4. More charts - we are already collecting and preparing a lot more data than we're showing... so that is coming soon

5. More types of alerts (SSL cert about to expire, stuff like that)

How was the oldest law (Code of Ur-Nammu)deciphered?

Hacker News - Mon, 04/08/2024 - 7:41pm

All I could find was a photograph at https://www.schoyencollection.com/law/sumerian/ur-nammu-ms-2064, and an English translation in Wikipedia. But the intermediate steps are missing documentation.

Hey, HN.

Michael Cyger here.

While my wife and 16-year-old set off on a college visit trip to the Midwest last week, my 13-year-old son and I stayed home with the family dog.

Knowing my son enjoys programming and wanting to do something that he would consider a fun, bonding activity, I suggested a "Cyger Hackathon Week" where we both develop a game and launch them publicly.

Naturally, a good chunk of our development time was spent in front of reruns of The Office, with a sprinkle of trips to our local pickleball courts, and numerous meals dedicated to chatting about our daily coding triumphs and challenges.

My game is Pyramid Solitaire.

(His is a 2-dimensional game on Godot called Lightning Roller, but it's not live yet.)

Full disclosure: I'm not a programmer. I have programmed when I was 12 using Basic, in college using Fortran 77, etc., but I don't do it for a living.

If you haven't played Pyramid Solitaire before, it's fun because you add up pairs of cards to 13 and try to clear all the unblocked cards of the pyramid.

It's low key, easy, and relaxing.

You can finish a game in about 3 minutes (1 minute if you get really lucky on the cards), so it's a great break from work or between tasks.

I wrote everything in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript in one week.

It was a ton of fun, like putting together a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle -- for someone like me that isn't a great programmer. It felt great building something that worked from start to finish.

If you like it, I will definitely add more features and functionality. There's a "suggest an improvement" link to send me an email, and I'd love to hear your feedback via email or here.

Oh, and if you're wondering about the killer domain name, Pyramid.com, yeah, it's one of a handful of names I've collected over the years. I love domains just like every other indie developer. It's the 29th oldest .com domain name in existence, first registered October 17, 1986.

Hope you enjoy the game! ♠♥♣♦
